New Beginnings: Saving the Best for Last
Schools are not buildings, curriculums, and machines. Schools are relationships and interactions among people.
(Johnson & Johnson, 1989)
My first month as Principal of the Wing School seems to have flown by faster than our beloved mascot the Eagle can soar! As I sit here at my desk in the Principal’s office, glancing out at the beautiful Monet Garden, or looking at the Principal sign on my office door, I have been thinking about those principals who have come before me with the utmost respect and admiration. When I arrived to teach in Sandwich, Mr. Dolan was the longtime Principal of the Wing (our library is dedicated to him). He was legendary even then. Those who came before him and those who followed…Mr. James, Mr. Janelli, Mr. Bridges, Mrs. Lima, and Mr. Smith, are to be commended for all that each contributed and achieved during his or her tenure as Principal of the Henry T. Wing School. I am humbled and inspired by their leadership and I hope to do them proud throughout this school year.
It will be an honor and a privilege to lead this fine school during this year of transition and transformation. I believe I have a balanced understanding of the history, culture, and “tradition of excellence” that is the hallmark of the Henry T. Wing School and the Sandwich Public Schools. It is my aim to see that everyone who is a member of the “Wing School Family” knows that he or she is valued, included, and supported, not only by me, but also by each other. I intend to be a visible presence, focusing on building relationships and fostering a positive school climate for students, parents/guardians, teachers and staff.
I am delighted to re-join the Henry T. Wing School Family. Since being appointed to the position, I have been reminded of what an extraordinary place the Wing School is and how dedicated and committed the families and staff are to the students and to the school. I look forward to contributing to an outstanding year alongside our terrific students, amazing teachers and staff and wonderful families as we celebrate and commemorate all that is the Henry T. Wing School past and present. Thanks for welcoming me back. My door is always open…please stop by throughout the year.

The Wing School Celebration and Commemoration Corner
I have organized the Wing School Celebration and Commemoration Committee. Our goal is to have several celebrations and commemorations throughout this final year in the Henry T. Wing School building that will honor current and alumni students, staff and families, as well as the building and it’s historical past. We have met twice to begin to develop some signature events and keepsakes. Stay tuned as we announce our initial ideas and plans in August. We will be looking for volunteers to contribute to making this last year the best one yet. |
School Building Readiness
Mr. Dintino, Mrs. McCarron, Mrs. Russell and I have been working diligently in the office to prepare for the students return in September. We have been finalizing next year's students’ and staff schedules, ordering supplies, reviewing and updating handbooks and safety procedures, hiring new staff and preparing for all that needs to be in place to make the school run smoothly for the children when they walk into the building on the first day of school. I feel I have become re-acquainted with finding my way around the building.
The custodial crew is making great strides cleaning and working around the summer school programs and camps to make sure the building is ready for the students and staff. Classrooms in sections of the building that are not being used this summer are by and large completely cleaned and move in ready. I look forward to walking in well maintained halls and being in clean classrooms filled with enthusiastic students and staff.

New Staff
We have been busy this summer interviewing candidates for some open positions here at the Wing School. I am pleased to say that we have hired Ms. Therese Cote as a fourth grade teacher. She is a talented educator that has most recently been working in the Spinnaker program. She is thrilled to be joining a highly regarded fourth grade staff and looking forward to meeting her students in September. Ms. Maria Powers is joining our special education staff as a special education teacher. She is an experienced educator familiar to the district as a former substitute. We are currently in need of a Math Intervention teacher, a Librarian and Educational Support Personnel and hope to have those positions hired in the near future.
School Day
This year all Wing students arrive and depart the school at the same time. This opportunity has come about because students in grades 7 and 8 relocated to the STEM Academy at the High School Campus. There will be a slight adjustment to start and end times district-wide.
The student "academic day" will be from 9-3:30 at the three K-6 schools. The doors for the school will open to greet all students at 8:45 and any student arriving after 9:00 will be considered tardy. The school day will end at 3:30 and we will begin dismissal procedures at 3:35 each day.
Please note that we do not have staff available before 8:45 to supervise students, therefore they will not be allowed inside the building. If you need extended day coverage for your child (before or after school), please contact Karen McCarthy at (508) 888- 8004.
