It has been said that humans are story-seeking animals. The cultures, religions, and big ideas of ages past have been transmitted from one generation to another through parables, fables, and legends. (Eaker, DuFour, & DuFour, 2002)
”When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.” Rodgers & Hammerstein
The catchy tune “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music at times sung and heard as a Holiday song (Trish Yearwood recently sang it at her family Christmas party shown on an HGTV special). At this time of year, it is appropriate that we reflect on all those “favorite things” in our lives. Three of my biggies are Wing School students, Wing School staff, and Wing School families. Truly, “when I am feeling sad,” all I need do is visit any classroom at H. T. Wing School or any PTA sponsored family event and “then I don’t feel so bad.”
Our Wing School children are truly “story-seeking animals.” We have all heard that students (and adults!) want to know how much we care before they care how much we know. I strongly believe in and share this sentiment, as do our teachers, staff, and families. As a result, our students not only learn a great deal academically, they also leave our classrooms, and eventually the Wing School with smiling faces on the outside and warm feelings inside.
I wish you and your families the most joyous of holiday seasons. During the break, I will make time to think of “my favorite Wing things” and reflect on the good thoughts and practices teachers, staff and families share with our children. Thank you one and all for caring about “all things Wing.” Thanks for persevering even through these difficult and stressful times. Thanks for finding little miracles of goodness and hope even when things appear bleak. It has been a fantastic 2014 despite many challenges; I am already looking forward to seeing everyone again in the New Year for what I hope will be a brighter 2015! Each of you has made a difference at Wing because of the pride and “Tradition Of Excellence” you bring to the school each day!
Happy Holidays!

CELEBRATING MRS. MCCARRON’S 29 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE SANDWICH PUBLIC SCHOOLS
It has been our privilege and honor to know and work with Mrs. Mary Fran McCarron, a valued member of the H.T.Wing and Sandwich Public Schools secretarial staff for the last 29 years.
The staff and students at Wing and in Sandwich, wish her a well deserved happy and healthy retirement. Mrs. McCarron’s last day at the Wing School will be December 30th. On behalf of the many administrators she has worked with, I would like to say THANK YOU to Mary Fran for a job well done.
Though Mrs. McCarron was not an educator in the sense of being a certified teacher, Mary Fran taught us much by her example, character, and work ethic. Over the course of the 29 years she worked at Wing and in the Sandwich School system, she touched the lives of countless numbers of students, families and staff as one of our most dedicated secretaries. Mary Fran has helped many behind the scenes. One recent year as the holidays approached, she took it upon herself to help a family with young children in distress and struggling with basic necessities, without seeking recognition or reimbursement for significant personal expenses. Her generosity in this particular instance can never be repaid. For that we admire her bigheartedness, and a family is forever grateful for her assistance to get back on their feet.
Mrs. McCarron your shoes will be hard to fill . . . Thank you for your years of commitment and devotion to “The Wing Family” and Sandwich Public Schools. You will be missed. Congratulations and best wishes for happiness in your next endeavor.

Celebrating And Commemorating The Wing School
On November 24th students were treated to stories, legends and lore from past students and retired and current staff members who taught and/or attended the Wing School as students themselves. Students enjoyed hearing about what the Wing School was like in the past by the people who were here. Students prepared many questions to ask our guest speakers. Fifth and sixth graders shared what they learned and wrote about it..
Grade 6 thoughts after listening to the speakers… Thank you to Mr. Hoxie, Mr. Alvezi and Mr. Pierce. From your stories, our class learned many interesting things about the history of the Wing School. For one thing, we never knew that the multipurpose room was once a cafeteria, a gym, and even once was divided into two classrooms. It was also strange to hear that when you were at Wing that there was only one classroom per grade. The way you described the playground was cool too. Most of us would have loved to join you on the seesaw and the merry-go-round even though they weren’t the safest equipment. You described these as unsafe, but we agreed that going on them sounded like fun! Also, I don’t think any of us will forget Mr. Hoxie’s funny story about the kid who fell through the ceiling in the multipurpose room! All of you described the Wing as a “family” and we feel the same way. Thanks for sharing some of your Wing memories with us. Mrs. Stanton’s Homeroom Grade 6 | Interesting facts quoted from Grade 5 after listening to the speakers Eleanor Winslow, JudyHendy, Sarah. Triplet… -The top floor of Wing School was the High School. -“Back in the day,” in 1937, three quarters of the building was not here. -Mrs. Hendy was in pre-school here in 1937 and when she was a senior she was on the girls’ basketball team that won the Cape Cod Championship in 1949. -Sarah had Mr. Bridges for a principal just like we did. -Most students walked to school in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s because there were not a lot of buses. -Girls were not allowed to wear pants, only dresses and skirts (not even through the winter!). -If there was a forest fire, the boys would have to leave the school to help fight it. -There was a spare room where nuts and berries were kept. -If your pants got wet from snow on the way to school you could put on your gym clothes and get your pants dried in the boiler room! |

Wing School Students Enjoy Book Drawing
On One Wednesday and Thursday December 10th and 11th parents visiting school for parent-teacher conferences were invited to visit a "Helping Learners at Home" information table. Flyers from both the Literacy and Math interventionists were available for parents to browse and take home. There were ideas for games, books, and strategies to help children reinforce reading and math concepts at home. Any parent visiting the table was encouraged to complete raffle tickets with their children's names to win free books. On Friday December 12th, school staff drew two names per grade level and called the surprised children to the lobby to claim their prizes. They chose a book of their own and posed for a photo (now on Twitter) shouting "read" instead of cheese. They couldn't have been more delighted or more polite with their winnings.

Hour of Code
All students at the Wing School joined the National “Hour of Code” thanks to Mrs. Palombo. Students enjoyed an hour of learning to code programming on the computer. The results were creative and quite inventive. Students were engaged and proud to be innovative and resourceful in their efforts!
