When asked to identify what made the school so good, every person, without fail, said it was the people of the school: the children, the families, and the staff. Nobody said, “We have a really great computer lab” or “a brand-new reading textbook.”(Eaker, DuFour, & DuFour, 2002)
“Thank YOU!” (Peter Frampton, circa 1976, introducing the song, “Baby I Love Your Way” on the Frampton Comes Alive album)
Most of you are likely too young to even remember Frampton’s classic live album (on the other hand, a few select others may be a tad too old!); as for me, I can recall spending my junior year of college listening and singing along to Frampton and thinking he was the ultimate of cool. My friends and I would even imitate his “Thank YOU!” when the opportunity presented itself. With Thanksgiving Day approaching, I thought it an appropriate time to offer my sincere thanks to all of families and staff at H.T. Wing and the Sandwich Public Schools for enriching the lives of our children.
I’m deeply thankful for our administrative support team at H. T. Wing. In many ways, their individual and collective greatness mirrors that of our overall staff. Their organizational skills and attention to details are unsurpassed. With several years of experience, each of them possesses valued expertise and insight that helps us all. “Thank YOU!” to Chris Dintino, our awesome assistant principal and a trusted colleague. “Thank YOU!” Marilyn Russell and Mary Fran McCarron, our extraordinary secretaries and the two women who really run the office. I am truly grateful for all they do to support the student, staff, and families each day with such patience and perseverance.
“Thank YOU!” to our exceptional PTA volunteers and the leadership team: Melissa Zylich, President, Jamie Karlson and Kim Lusty, Co-Vice Presidents, Julie Heyer, Treasurer, and Jen Harmon, Secretary. Each has made such a positive impact on our entire school community with their compassion and overall commitment to excellence. They are tireless workers, and I am deeply thankful that they are here each day supporting our teachers and students on behalf of the families of the Wing School.
Our entire staff successfully parallels our administrative team: We have many veteran teachers and support staff on whom we rely for their wisdom and for sharing and spreading how we do things, “The Wing School Family Way!” We also have teachers and staff who are in new roles this year. We applaud them for their flexibility and willingness to accept new challenges that benefit our kids. Finally, we have solid teachers and staff completely new to Wing this year. Each of them has brought with them a multitude of skills and traits that are helping students and staff to grow continuously. “Thank YOU!”
Whether you are a veteran Wing staff or family member, or someone new to the Wing School Community, I am genuinely thankful that you are here. I have the best job in the world because I am surrounded by all of you every day. In the above quote, Eaker and colleagues have clearly stated what makes our own school great: it is not our facility, nor is it our top notch curriculum; instead, it is each member of the Wing School performing great deeds day in and day out for the benefit of the children of the Wing School. As Peter Frampton said, “Thank YOU!” for reminding me so clearly what it means to be a part of the Wing School family and the Sandwich Public Schools each day (“Ooh Baby I Love Your Way”)! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

MORNING GAMES CLASS AT WING WITH MRS. JOY | Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes |
Find Out What’s New!
What a great start the Wing School has had with the Morning Games Group! Morning Games Group is offered on Tuesday or Thursday mornings and is a way for students to begin their day with exercise. Currently in grades 3 and 4 there are 54 kids signed up, in grades 5 and 6 there are 27 kids signed up. This has been an amazing turn out and I am very excited each morning that I come in to such a great group of kids who want to move. The games that we are playing in the Morning Games group are games that primarily the kids have not yet played before. We begin each session with a brief period of an open gym to warm up the bodies and get ready for the game. The games that we are playing focus on teamwork and strategies. The main goal of this group is to get kids moving in the morning and leave feeling ready to begin their day. This group has been such a successful one that I am planning on doing it again beginning in January. | As the district moves forward in the fall as two schools, one of the goals is to expand the playgrounds at both the Oak Ridge and Forestdale Schools. Together Counts is sponsoring a Healthy Playground Makeover sweepstakes. Enter every day for a chance to win a $30,000 grant and a new playground. Anyone in the community can enter on behalf of our schools, though you can only register for one school. When searching for the schools...Forestdale is in Forestdale with zip code of 02644 and Oak Ridge is in East Sandwich with zip code of 02537. Please register and enter as often as you can...if you have children attending both schools in the Fall an idea might be to have each spouse register for each school!! http://www.togethercounts.com/at-school/win-for-your-school/sweepstakes |
Patti Leary, Wing Literacy Coach, Presents at National Conference
On Sunday, November 2, 2014, Patti Leary was joined by Wing Kindergarten teacher Lynne Phinney and Pre-school teacher Beth Hickson as she presented at a session called “Language Rich Literacy Beginnings: Expanding Children’s Language and Literacy Development in PreK and Kindergarten Classrooms. ” Cindy Downend, Assistant Director, Primary Literacy Collaborative at Lesley University co-presented with Ms. Leary at the Literacy for All Conference in Providence, R.I.
Literacy for All attracts nearly a thousand educators from all over the United States and beyond to attend 100+ workshops on topics of literacy. The annual Literacy for All Conference is the Northeast region’s leading literacy professional development event for teachers, administrators, literacy coaches, reading specialists, and educators trained in Reading Recovery.
Ms. Leary’s workshop was attended by a wide ranging group of teachers and administrators from California, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The discussion was passionate and lively as the group explored the research about the power of oral language, particularly for our youngest children. The participants also developed ideas for ways to increase the amount of teaching and application of oral language in their school day.
The Sandwich Public Schools is proud to have a staff member presenting at such a prestigious conference and also celebrates the teachers who devoted a Sunday to extend their professional learning.
