Happy New Year!
“Woah, we’re halfway there, Woah, livin’ on a prayer, take my hand, we’ll make it I swear, Woah, livin’ on a prayer.” (Livin’ on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child)
The 90th day of school came at the end of January. It marks the halfway point in the school.
As I reflect on the first half of the year, I still have the same feelings of gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the Wing School Principal. I am so fortunate to work with a great staff, wonderful families, and terrific students everyday.
As we begin the second half of the year, you may have more questions regarding the upcoming district reorganization. There is a lot of information about the process published on Sandwich Learns Together (click to see). One section in particular, Moving Forward (click to see) is dedicated to their organization.
Also, please know that if you have a question about the process or want to verify any information you are hearing in another setting, please feel free to email or call me, Marc Smith, the Forestdale Principal, m[email protected] (508 477-6600), and Trish Hill, the Oak Ridge principal [email protected] (508-833-0111) and one of us will help you.

Welcome
Welcome back to the Wing fold Kerry Gendreau. She will be supporting us in the office again after a few years absence. Kerry will work alongside Marilyn Russell and we could not be happier.
Have a great second half of the school year! “Woah, we’re halfway there…”
YOUNG AT ARTS
The sixth grade just finished their three dimensional projects and are moving into drawing in one-point perspective. The fifth grade finished their paper fish and is working on winter compositions. The fourth grade is finishing a mixed media collage and will be moving on to color theory. The third grade just finished paper masks and are starting a project based on Surrealist art. The kindergarten, first, and second grades have been busy making paper sculptures, coil and pinch pots, and experimenting with sponge painting. | |
Boxes of Hope Project
Over the month of December, the Wing School’s fifth graders did a project called Boxes of Hope. This project is a present to a classmate. The box contained an inspiring and encouraging letter, 5 well written compliments, a picture, a handmade gift and a poem or short story.
The process of making our Boxes of Hope started by filling out a survey about ourselves, and then picking another person’s survey randomly. After we found out who our buddy was we had to keep who we had a secret for about 2 or 3 weeks. Using the information from the survey we made very thoughtful things for our buddy. During school we learned how to write the poem or short story, 5 compliments and the inspiring and encouraging letter. At home, we made the picture and handmade gift. Last, we wrapped up our boxes and added a few last minute touches of our own.
We were inspired for this project by reading a book called Hattie’s Birthday Box by Pam Conrad. It was about a man’s 100th birthday. He was going to see his sister for the first time in 84 years. He was nervous about meeting her again because he gave her an empty box for her birthday. When he saw Hattie he thought she would be mad at him for giving her an empty box. It turned out Hattie loved the box and was not mad at him at all. The boxes show some of the most meaningful gifts are the homemade ones.
When the day came to opening our boxes, everyone was super excited. We were all waiting so long to give, but of course also to receive. Everyone had learned so much about each other, and giving during this project. Not only was it a good learning experience but it was also so much fun.

Students were treated to stories, legends and lore from past students, retired and current staff members who taught and/or attended the Wing School as students themselves. Students enjoyed hearing about what the Wing School was like in the past by the people who were here. Students prepared many questions to ask our guest speakers. Fourth Graders shared what they learned from Mrs. Dorna Allen, a former teacher, Ms. Deb Stanley, a former student and current substitute teacher, and Ms. Sarah Triplet, a former student and wrote about it...
- Every Saturday morning there were basketball games in the gym, which is now our cafeteria.
- The multi-purpose room we use today, use to be the school cafeteria.
- The section of the school the fourth grade is in was built in 1927.
- One year in third grade, Mrs. Allen’s vacuum exploded while cleaning after an art project and the students got extra recess while the principal helped to clean it up.
- The building was also an air raid shelter
- If a child misbehaved he/she could be hit on the knuckles with a ruler!
- Ms. Alty was a student of Mrs. Allen’s in third grade.
- At one time, there were four classrooms in the multi-purpose room.
- The assistant principal’s office was once a third grade classroom.
- Cooking and sewing were subjects
