There are two things we must give children: the first one is roots; the other, WINGS. | |
The tangible gifts we give our children are nice, but the intangible gifts of “roots” and “WINGS” are among the most important of all, gifts that loving parents and guardians give their children and loving teachers give their students. The “roots- WINGS” metaphor is an apt one not only for Wing School parents, but also for Wing School educators and staff. At first glance, they seem to suggest opposite ends of the spectrum: keep someone grounded while letting them soar. However, without first ensuring the former we cannot accomplish the latter. Here at the Wing School, the above quote can be applied on several levels to what we, the educators and staff members, make every effort to do in working with our students, just as parents and guardians do on many other levels at home.
At Wing, one way that the roots- WINGS symbolism works is to picture the gift of roots as teaching our students proficient habits and behaviors that will increase their likelihood of success as we also give them WINGS —the freedom to make choices about their learning and their future. The more we can teach and promote positive habits, skills and behaviors now, the more likely we are grounding them in the core values that will allow them to take flight later as they grow and soar into productive and independent citizens.
Having grounded them in this way, they can more readily grasp the academic content, growing the “WINGS” that will take them to new heights each day. Giving the gifts of roots and WINGS to our kids each day is yet another example of how we at the Henry T. Wing School celebrate and commemorate our Tradition of Excellence!

There will be an evening for parents of incoming 3-6 students at the Oak Ridge School on June 8th and 9th from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Out of respect for our families who have children attending the Wing School Spring Concert, we are changing the dates in order to avoid the conflict to the following:
Parents of incoming 5th and 6th graders should plan on coming on June 8th
Parents of incoming 3rd and 4th graders should plan on coming on June 9th.
The presentations on each night will be the same, so please feel free to come on a different night if your family has a conflict on your scheduled night. The schedule is simply to alleviate space and parking.
There will be an opportunity to hear about the new school from the building principal, Mrs. Hill as well as tour the building and pick up information about summer learning opportunities from local organizations. We look forward to having you join us for one of these Parent Information Nights.

The “Oak Ridge Transition Road Show”…a Big Success!
Our students currently in grades 2 through 5 were treated to a fantastic digital tour through the Oak Ridge School halls, classrooms, main office, nurses’ office and common spaces. Four Oak Ridge students currently in grades 3, 4, and 5, were their guides. Following this, Ms. Hill, the Principal, Ms. MacPherson, the Assistant Principal and Ms. Landry, who will return as Assistant Principal at the Oak Ridge, took this Road Show to Wing students on May 26th, to Forestdale students on May 27th, and to Oak Ridge students on May 28th. They provided students with lots of terrific information about what will be the same and what will be new. The students learned about the 7C’s and their new mascot was revealed! At the end of the presentation, there was an opportunity for many intelligent and thoughtful questions to be asked and answered, as well as several remarkable student suggestions at each school. Students and teachers in attendance were thrilled to learn about the new opportunities everyone will have next year. Many students commented that they feel more comfortable about what is to come because of all that was presented and that they are looking forward to a new school that will be a “Nurturing” place, full of student and staff “Enthusiasm,” preparing each of them for much “Success,” and filling everyday with “Wonder!” Just ask them.
First Day of School Next Year at Forestdale
The Forestdale School wants to be sure that everyone knows about our exciting plans for the first day of school next year. In considering the specific unique needs of students in kindergarten through grade two, the significant change that next September will represent for so many, and our desire to build a strong family community and the practices of other successful districts, we are creating a new tradition for the first day of school for students in grades PreK-2. This new tradition for Sandwich mirrors successful practices of other districts with primary schools.
Here is what we have planned.
On September 8th, students will be invited to attend school with their parents during one of three sessions that day. Each session will last approximately one hour and will include a visit to the classroom, an opportunity to meet the teacher, and to participate in a family activity within the classroom. Parents will also meet with the principal and review bus procedures and expectations prior to the first day of K-2 bus transportation (September 9).
Additionally, parents will be able to visit the nurse, set up lunch accounts, visit with the specialist teachers, confirm emergency information with the office, and much more. This special event gives parents an opportunity to meet teachers on the first day of school, see their child’s classroom and create a powerful positive memory with their child. Details about this special event can be found on Sandwich Learns Together at: http://sandwichlearnstogether.org/2015/04/30/first-day-of-school-at-forestdale-september-2015/
Forestdale Information Night and Kick Off to Summer Learning Event
Just a quick reminder to families, the Forestdale School will be holding a dual purpose event on June 4th from 6-8. Mr. Smith will be running information sessions throughout the evening providing parents with information about the Forestdale School next year. Parents and students will also be invited to participate in a self-guided tour of the school. This will give parents and students an opportunity to see how the building is laid out and learn about where the different grade-level classrooms will be next year. Last, but certainly not least, there will be a fantastic event going on in our gymnasium. The Second Annual Kick-Off to Summer Learning event is a fantastic opportunity for families explore some fun ways to keep learning going through the summer. Come explore the tables and exhibits, play some games and maybe even win a prize!
